Summary/Abstract: Anger is one of the most discussed emotions, due to the difficulties in detecting its emergence during the development of the individual. Behaviors accompanied by anger and rage serve many different purposes and nuances of aggressive behavior. Recent advances in neuroscientific and developmental psychology research, as well as clinical psychodynamic research, allow new insight into the role of anger and its direction in many aspects of human behavior. The so-called affective neurosciences show the phylogenetic origins of both circuits underlying the emergence of anger, along with its evolutionary role in promoting survival. The basis of this theory is the psychodynamic theory of motivational systems, which assigns a dual role to anger: on the one hand, this affect is an inward-directed signal to overcome an obstacle or an unpleasant situation; on the other hand, anger is also a communicative signal directed outwards establishing conflict in interpersonal relations and emotional connections. Our studies of specific human behavior demonstrate the evaluation of such signals by higher cortical functions, and there is no doubt that the meaning that guides individual behavior is ultimately interpreted at the social and cultural level.
