Summary/Abstract: The authors summarize the characteristic features of consequences owing to the transformation in one of the most underdeveloped area of Hungary following the political transition. They track the historical process of the disintegration of traditional peasant social-economic structure and the effect of “socialist” development. They are of the opinion that the market reforms instituted in Hungary made easier the implementation of market economy. However, the European and global market competition had numerous consequences, for which the Hungarian economy and society had not been prepared. The employment crisis developed has taken a turn differently in the different regions of the country. In the examined area, a “breakdown spiral” has come into existence, which integrates the negative impacts and makes poverty hereditary in the circle of some social groups (youths, senior citizens, unskilled people, Gypsy population, inhabitants of tiny villages).A new feature of the examination is that it draws the mental impacts of social crisis and the change of social scale of values.
