Summary/Abstract: The present study examines the history of German language teacher training from the appearance of the Ratio Educationis (1777) till the end of the 19th century. A systemic review of regulations, laws, and curricula enables an examination of the changes in teacher training institutions, includ ing the language of instruction in teacher training. The year 2019 marked the 200th anniversary of elementary level teacher training for the German minority in Hungary. The most important historical sources examined in this study’s qualitative research analysis are curricula, educational laws, and regulations; it also reviews textbooks, timetables, and related publications. An in depth look at these documents allows us to follow the continuously changing attitudes toward minority teacher training throughout the different epochs of Hungarian education.
