Summary/Abstract: The article explains the differences between linguistic and sociolinguistic approaches to the relationship between language and geopolitics. The author argues for the unsuitability of the linguistic approach, which is related to the weaknesses of the Whorf-Sapir hypothesis, which he proposes to reject as wrong. Instead, a sociolinguistic approach is proposed. Using it, he presents the relationship between the development cycles of empires and civilizations and the history of the spread and disappearance of their associated languages and types of writing. He devotes much ttention to the issues of linguistic imperialism and the sociolinguistic consequences of the national idea, as well as the tendency toward cultural and political integration and disintegration of the world.
