Summary/Abstract: This article is devoted to a comparative analysis of the theory of model tragedy presented by Aristotle in the Poetics with the tragedy of the character and fate of Antigone from Sophocles’ “Theban Trilogy” (King Oedipus, Oedipus at Colonus, Antigone). The author argues that the character of Antigone outlined by Sophocles and the development of the events in which she takes part correspond to Aristotle’s concept of the cathartic function of tragedy in two simultaneous dimensions. The spectator is “cleansed” from the feeling of terror thanks to the appropriate character traits of the heroine. Pity, on the other hand, is “cured” by following the sequence of events involving Antigone and their consequences.
