Summary/Abstract: Despite the intense negative publicity it has recently received in the media, plagiarism is still a large-scale phenomenon in contemporary Romania. Not only in education and research, but also in music, fashion, business or art, the tendency to “steal” other people’s work is on the increase, for two main reasons: making money easily and gaining prestige quickly. The purposes of this article are to present the history and the evolution of plagiarism, in order to show that this phenomenon has become more and more complex throughout time, to analyse the reasons why people tend to copy or to imitate rather than to create original works, to make the clear distinction between copying and plagiarizing, with all the social, ethical and legal implications, to offer different cultural perspectives on plagiarism and to emphasize some famous authors’ beliefs regarding this dishonest practice.
