Summary/Abstract: The internationalization of higher education is a relatively new phenomenon, which at a conceptual level can have various interpretations. The analysis of the phenomenon allows us to find that since the late Middle Ages, universities have been appreciated as a sociocultural phenomenon, whose purpose was to spread knowledge beyond the territory of their location. At the same time, higher education institutions, established in the 19th and 20th centuries, have fulfilled their traditional functions of forming professional groups and the local elite, as well as developing science and technology at the national level. In this article, the authors describe the process of internationalization of higher education in Israel, in order to explain the need to assimilate the correlation of phenomena: globalization, internationalization, important for the knowledge-based society.
