“ONCE IT SHALL SEE THE LIGHT OF GOD WHEN THE TIME COMES.” THE SECRET OF THE SEALED ENVELOPE WITH LAST WORDS OF T. G. MASARYK

Summary/Abstract: In 1996, Antonín Sum, a former secretary of the minister of foreign affairs Jan Masaryk, handed an archive of the popular politician, preserved especially thanks to the secretary Lumír Soukup, over to the State Central (today National) Archives. In 2005, Antonín Sum added a sealed envelope to this collection, which is to contain the last words of the president Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk as they had been captured by his son Jan. The envelope is to be opened in 2025. The study details the last days of T. G. Masaryk in September 1937 and expounds on what the envelope may contain. It may be the words similar to those said by T. G. Masaryk to Edvard Beneš, in the presence of Jan Masaryk, during the president’s illness in August 1934 that have a primarily political value; it may also be the expression of president’s attitude towards religion issues. As less probable seems the assumption that the envelope would contain some intimate family or personal secret.
