Summary/Abstract: The article presents the image of “poverty” perpetuated in the dialects of the Lublin region in the light of the concept of cultureme. The analysed regional dialect material was shown against a broaderbackground of Polish dialects. The first part off the paper highlights the most important literatureon the subject and theoretical findings related to the definition of cultureme and its place among oth-er units of description used in ethnolinguistics and cultural linguistics. The second part cites studiesin which “poverty” was recognized as an important word (a collective symbol, cultureme or linguistic--cultural concept). Subsequently, the author presents dialectal material, proving that “poverty”, beinga cultureme from the Lublin region, and thus a lexeme paramount for the identity of its inhabitants, also has a general, nationwide range and is one of the most important lexemes describing the identity of inhabitants of villages in various parts of Poland.
