Summary/Abstract: One of the key elements leading to the improvement of efficiency and reduction of costs and negative environmental impact of supply chains are changes in transport systems and means of transport used in these chains. The article deals with the – so far practically absent in Polish scientific literature – the subject of economic, ecological and organizational benefits related to the introduction of extended road mega trains with an increased permissible total weight. The purpose of this article is to prove that the implementation of the so-called general cargo megalong road trains connected with the increased total weight and, as a result, increased transport capacity will improve the competitive- ness of supply chains using such combinations. This increase in competitiveness is a derivative of the fact that such combinations allow for a significant reduction in fuel consumption and thus the emission of harmful substances, including CO2, per transport performance. The additional cost reduction is achieved by halving the number of drivers and trucks required for the same transport work. The basic research thesis is that such combinations significantly contribute to the increase in cost competitiveness of supply chains and the reduction of their negative environmental impact. This article was mainly based on the analysis of research results and scientific articles published primarily by renowned Scandinavian – Swedish and Finnish – universities and research institutes. The above is due to the fact that these two countries in Europe have the most practical experience of implementing teams of this kind. Tests are ongoing in the Netherlands and Spain.
