Summary/Abstract: In 1810, in the area of West Prussia, regular pastoral service for 856 Catholic soldiers was provided by priests belonging to different dioceses. Garrisons without pastoral care were located in the Catholic diaspora, which was not organised into parishes. After the announcement of Pope Pius VIII’s bull De salute animarum in1821, a considerable part of the West Prussia province found itself within the borders of the diocese of Culm. From 1832, chaplains were appointed in garrisons. In general, however, they were not employed by the army on a full-time basis. Garrisons located in the Catholic diaspora were usually looked after by non-local priests.
