MOVEMENT AND SOUND PRODUCTION IN PIANO PLAYING: THE CONTRIBUTION OF SCIENCE

Summary/Abstract: When playing the piano and all the other musical instrument, there is a need for certain movements to reach, targeted sounds, musical expression and a nice touch. Each movement is made to reach the technical and musical expression. All years of exercises and studies aimed at the fluency of these movements. For centuries, this issue has been discussed by different pedagogues-pianists in books on piano playing. The ‘touch’ used to play the piano finds its place among the subjects discussed in these books. The movement sequences mentioned deeply affect not only the technique but also the expression and music to be conveyed. The content of this subject covers a wide range of areas such as pedagogy, music, acoustics, psycho-acoustics, biomechanics and hand-arm physiology. For the last hundred years, research and analyzes have been carried out looking at the subject from a scientific perspective. Researchers doing performance and acoustic studies contribute to the subject, examine techniques and make suggestions. In this article, examples from the studies and research mentioned in the last century will be examined.
