Values and relationships between people as the basis for successful environmental protection: The Perspective of Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI

Summary/Abstract: The article presents Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI's ideas on ecology in a cultural context in order to present his understanding of the relationship between environmental protection and culture. The author claims that successful environmental protection requires values and relationships between people, and that the relativisation of values and the treatment of people as objects leads to the radicalisation of environmental movements. In the article, the author uses the descriptive method to analyse source texts and the comparative method to confront the theologian's thought with other approaches to ecology. The results indicate the need to consider values and interpersonal relationships in the approach to environmental protection, in line with the teachings of Ratzinger/Benedict XVI. The basis for the analysis of Ratzinger's thought on the above issue is provided by the collections of works: Opera Omnia T. VIII/2 – Church – Sign among Nations.
