Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on the biography of Capt. Kazimierz Czyhiryn (1898–1940), which shows the complicated fate of Poles in the first half of the 20th century. He was born in Ukraine to a Polish family with deep patriotic traditions. He started his first pro-independence work while studying at the gymnasium in Winnica. In the years 1916–1917 Czyhiryn served in the Russian army, and then in the III Polish Corps in Russia. He has then been held in Bolshevik captivity for two years. After having re-turned to Poland, he served in the 29th and 31st Kaniowski Rifle Regiment. Serving for many years in the Lodz garrison, he became a well-known and popular person among the inhabitants of the city. In 1931, he took the position of an orderly officer of the commander of Corps District No. IV in Lodz – first under General Stanisław Nałęcz Małachowski, and then under General Władysław Langner. Subsequently, together with Lagner, Czyhiryn went to Lviv, where he held a similar position. In September 1939, he participated in talks on the terms of the city’s capitulation. In 1940, he was arrested by the NKVD and murdered in unknown circumstances (the so-called Ukrainian Katyn List).
