Summary/Abstract: Based on the analysis of principal stages in Čiurlionis’ painting evolution, the article reveals the relationship that the Lithuanian artist had with the natural world. It shows that nature along with its diversity in colours and forms was the main source of the artist’s artistic inspiration. Throughout the mature phase of his artistic activity Čiurlionis drew nearer to great nature-worshipping Chinese and Japanese masters of landscape painting, as was evidenced by these common traits: careful observation of various manifestations of the natural world, attentive listening to enigmatic natural phenomena, grasp of one’s integrity with nature, particular sensitivity for seasonal changes, worldview from bird’s eye, clarity of painting manner, inclination towards juxtaposition of various spatial plans, and restraint of colour system. Just as in East Asian landscape painting, the Man occupies a modest place in Čiurlionis’ paintings – the Man is treated as an organic part of nature, included into united operation of universal elements and infinite flow of cosmic metamorphoses. Čiurlionis, similarly to East Asian masters, paints “soul landscapes” derived from memories and rich imagination, as opposed to the ones observable in reality.
