Summary/Abstract: This paper analyzes the poetry of Jakov Šantić, today an unjustly forgotten poet of the Mostar literary circle (Mostarski književni krug), who published only one collection of poetry in his lifetime under the title Poems (Pjesme), printed in Mostar in 1904, by the well-known publishers Paher and Kisić. Looking back at the poet’s short life, poetic work and posthumously published poems, we first analysed his poetry in the context of Serbian Modernism, pointing out that he had spontaneously accepted the Symbolist program. In the paper, we draw attention to the presence of Baudelaire’s themes in the poetry of Jakov Šantić, as well as to his acceptance of the programme principles proclaimed by Paul Verlaine in the famous poem “The Art of Poetry”
