Summary/Abstract: The dynamic development of the digital economy requires reflection on its role in shaping sustainability development (SD) in EU countries which have enacted a number of political initiatives towards an ecological transformation. The aim of the article is an attempt to show the interdependencies between digitization (DESI indicator) and the author’s SD indicator. According to the theory SD indicator includes three pillars: ecological (ecological footprint), social (Human Prosperity and Environmental Impact Index – WHI) and economic (GDP/cap PPP). In order to group EU countries according to the above-mentioned indicators Ward’s method was used (World Population Review, The World Happiness Report, Gallup, International Monetary Fund, European Commission database). Research shows that a higher level of digitization is accompanied by a higher level of economic development and sustainable development. However, there are no clear links between DESI and the ecological pillar. The obtained results indicate the need for faster implementation of digital tools in the ecological pillar and institutional changes so that the digital revolution is not a new industrial revolution leading this time to digital unsustainability.
