Summary/Abstract: Without trying any specificity in the field of criminal law, criminology, and not even philosophy of law, the brief approach to the reason for the appearance of punishment and its becoming crucial instrument in human organization, then the retrospective of imprisonment for three quarters of a century, it tries to point out as subtly as it can be done that, in the end, where there is society, there is crime and there is coercion.
