Summary/Abstract: Professor Dan Ghiocel (1922-2006) was one of the important personalities of Romanian science and technology in the field of civil engineering during the second half of the twentieth century. In design, his activity was diverse and extensive by the elaboration of projects for various types of constructions: civil ones (hotels, hospitals, cultural centers, schools, railway stations, apartment and administrative buildings), industrial and engineering ones (halls, silos, water towers). In many cases, he proposed new technical solutions by implementing new materials and technologies. In his scientific activity, he tackled new research directions of great interest and relevance: probabilistic analysis methods and applications in construction, structural safety, wind engineering, nuclear power plants, seismic soil-structure interaction. On the 100th anniversary of his birth, Professor Dan Ghiocel is part of the gallery of the great civil engineers of Romania, being a real model for future generations of specialists.
