Summary/Abstract: The political situation in Bulgaria after the bloody suppression of the Prague Spring changed significantly and this led to new restrictions for artists. Increased scrutiny of the inside-outside principle distinguished the decade with its apparent calm and lack of ideological contradictions be-tween the authorities and the theatre-makers. Against this backdrop, Socialist Realism continued to be the official and sole method in art, but theatrical practice increasingly refuted the authorities in their insistence that such a principle and method actually existed. This article examines the trends in scenography that were present in theatre practice during the 1970s and the ways in which they were accepted and incorporated as part of an expanding Socialist Realism.
