Summary/Abstract: This scientific study traces the development of the polyphonic cadence from linear to harmonic in its two varieties, authentic and plagal. The reasons for the dominance of authentic chordal connections over plagal ones are described. An interesting reading of the third connections between the chords of the second half of the 19th century is presented as an expression of the convergence between the harmonic and linear cadence.
