Summary/Abstract: This study proves the need to optimize counterpoint training in Bulgarian educational practice. The methodology applied for almost a century is based on the system of J. Fux. Its application in modern conditions requires some adjustments. The most significant of them is the elimination of classes on the first three types of counterpoint and starting directly from the fourth type - counterpoint in syncope. The author devotes a special place to the question of the fourth, not accepting its classification as dissonance. He maintains that this interval is consonant but non-acoustic, which is why, locked to the bass, he falls into a subordinate position.
