Summary/Abstract: Political parties do not enjoy high social recognition in democratic societies. People seldom join them, do not identify with them, do not trust them, and even go to elections more rarely than in past decades. These are all phenomena which are well documented in the literature but draw conclusions about the parties’ perception indirectly. The aim of this exploratory article is to show how political parties per se are perceived by the Polish public opinion. Based on empirical research: survey with a representative sample and secondary data analysis of CBOS reports, we draw conclusions on the perception of Polish political parties. The article complements the assessment of political parties, with the direct perception of Polish parties both as actors on the political stage and as institutions of the democratic state. It shows that apprehension of parties is more nuanced that it may be recognized at first glance, and that the differentiation between the parties as actors and democratic institutions is vital to understand the emerging duality of this perception.
