Slavic Literatures in Bulgaria: A (Non)User’s Guide

Summary/Abstract: The article examines the state of the teaching of Slavic literature at the Faculty of Slavic Studies of the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, taking a broad look at the problem of synchrony and diachrony. The author looks for the historical reasons for the refusal of mutual recognition among the Slavs, their attempts to find arguments that they are not Slavs and to replace their original identity with a vague universality. The question of the incoherence (inequality) between the separate literatures of the Slavs is touched upon, and disagreement with the transgression of large cultures and languages over smaller ones is expressed. Finally, a hypothesis is expressed as to whether and to what extent A. P. Chekhov, the only name of Slavic origin that entered the world dramatic canon, can become a unifying factor for looking at the Slavs through their literary and theatrical interest in his work in relation to themselves and in relation to the rest of the world? Can we reinvent ourselves with the help of Chekhov’s dramaturgy?
