Summary/Abstract: Civil marriage is a legal status recognized in all EU countries, but each Member State reserves the right to request certain acts necessary for marriage abroad. Other types of partnerships, such as civil unions and registered partnerships or de facto unions, are governed by rules different from those applicable to marriage. National legal and practical issues related to marriage differ from one member country to another, especially in terms of: the rights and obligations of married couples, the relationship between religious and civil marriage or the possibility of same-sex marriage. In this article, I set out to present some aspects of this important institution of marriage and how it is viewed in different states of the European Union.
