Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to present the ways in which perpetrators of crimes justify and excuse their actions, reducing their sense of guilt and maintaining a positive self-image. The author describes the most well-known theories explaining the rationalization mechanisms, which refer both to the assumptions of psychologists (cognitive dissonance theory by Leon Festinger, dissociative practices by Albert Bandura), and researchers dealing with criminology and sociology of deviance (neutralization techniques by Gresham Sykes and David Matza).
