Summary/Abstract: The paper aims at presenting a few types of representation of animals in literature and contemporary culture. Through various examples from Slavic literatures and cultures the text illustrates three mechanisms of animal substitution: cultural, linguistic, marketing. The vast diverse animal world is narrowed to just two main focuses: the scorpion and the cow, and their real life as opposed to their cultural duplicates.
