Summary/Abstract: Present article aims at analyzing a memoir of John Maxwell Coetzee (better known as J. M. Coetzee), an outstanding writer from The Republic of South Africa. The title of his memoir is Boyhood. Scenes from Provincial Life. It is quite obvious, that – on account of the limits of human memory and language – no one is able to reproduce his personal past in the story and may only reveal its current representation. Accordingly the authoress of the article doesn’t look in the considered memoir for the truth of facts, but for the truth of narrative which means the current image or representation of personal past. She is also interested how J. M. Coetzee tells his boyhood experiences, which factors determine the identity of the child and the young man, and what is the impact of the family and social environment on the life of the man, on his development, behaviour, self-concious and important life choices.
