Summary/Abstract: From labor law point of view, public holidays in Bulgaria can be characterized as a type of days off, not so much related to the need to rest and restore the workforce (what is the function of, for example, the daily and weekly holidays), but with marking and celebrating some historical events, religious holidays, etc. Public holidays are established in Art. 154 of the LC and the work мperformed in these days is usually overtime. Even when overtime does not occur, it is again subject to increased payment. If what has been said so far is relatively undisputed in the legal literature and in the court and administrative practice, the research will seek an answer to some questions that give rise to hesitation – specifically, what is the legal meaning of „absent days“. It turns out that the Bulgarian legislator uses this concept with different shades of meaning, which is of a nature to cause confusion and generate disputes.
