Summary/Abstract: The increasing pressure of Russian settlement on the southern border of the Commonwealth, together with its attempts to seize the forest complexes belonging to Ksawery and Michał Lubomirskis to use them as a source of raw material for the expansion of Kherson, in mid-1778 triggered a confl ict. It culminated in the seizure of the Nerubaj forest in March 1780. Only then did Empress Catherina II nominate Russian commissioners, even though she agreed to establish a delimitation commission already in 1779. This made it possible for the joint Polish-Russian commission to begin its work which ended with the signing of the demarcation act in January 1781
