Summary/Abstract: „The Great Union” in 1918 fulfils a historic process, following which all the historical provinces in which Romanians lived joined together in a national state, Romania. In this context, in Oltenia region, the efforts of some personalities – Constantin Rădulescu-Motru and Dumitru Drăghicescu, contributed and militated in favour of the unity and sovereignty of Romania, both inside the country and abroad. The activity of Constantin Rădulescu-Motru was oriented towards the fight for preserving the Romanian language, the habits and customs, for developing the national consciousness, cultivating the ideals of justice and freedom, for the unity of the Romanian nation. Thus, we discover him as an activist militant for “expressing the sense and desire of the country”, for awakening the conscience of the nation, which attracts, during the war for completeness, deportation in Bulgaria, in the camp in Trojan village, together with other militants and leaders of the cultural and Romanian life. Another personality of Oltenia was Dumitru Drăghicescu, who fought for the unity of the Romanian people, for the traditional values, family, Romanian village, the spirituality of the nation, claiming that “the Romanian peasantry was meant to preserve our race, our land, our language and faith and directly or indirectly represents our nation’s most original assets”. He was one of the distinguished members of the group recognizing the rights of the Romanians to have a national state within their ethnic boundaries at the “Congress of nationalities” held in Rome, in 1918, April, 9-12. All these are definite proofs of the actions taken by personalities in Oltenia, from various fields, who supported the national rights, who fought for the national ideal and who directly or indirectly contributed to the general effort to achieve the Great Union in December, 1918.
