The Church "Assumption of the Virgin Mary" from Sadu (Sibiu County)

Summary/Abstract: In 2020, tree hundred years since the founding the church dedicated to the "Assumption of the Virgin" were celebrated in Sadu, the village where Transylvania’s most ardent of the Greek-Catholic bishops was born. The place of worship was raised, partially through the contribution of Ioan Inochentie Micu, on much older foundations, dating back half a millennium. In 2023, there will be three centuries since the completion of the original mural decoration, preserved today only in fragments inside the venerable monument. Finally, almost a century has passed since the publication of the first research undertaken on the iconographic ensemble and other decades since the communication of a series of scientific contributions aimed at bringing the church to the attention of the public, highlighting its architectural value and the representative character of the artistic components with which it was endowed at various historical stages. A critical revision of these writings is therefore in favor of deepening knowledge in relation to the church in Sadu, in the light of some recent investigations that indicated more precisely stages in the building and adornment of the monument and led to the completion of the biography of the two painters from Rașinari, Popa Ivan and Nistor Dascălul, to whom the creation of the original murals was attributed. A final aspect concerns the contribution of the painter Ioan from Poplaca to the decoration of the iconostasis in Sadu with portable icons, which also supports a more complete understanding of his artistic personality.
