Summary/Abstract: This study looks at the way an unprecedented model of representing Virgin Mary with Child became widespread in the Romanian church art, during the first half of the nineteenth century. Its recognition in the Romanian iconography was due to a series of exceptional artistic works, created by leading artists of that era, such as the monk painters Isaia and David, or the laymen artists Nicolae Teodorescu Pitarul and Nicolae Polcovnicul. They had mastered the pattern of the icon from the teachers who formed them, who were also supervising the workshops that functioned, at the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the next century, within Cernica, Căldăruşani and Pasărea monasteries, near Bucharest. After having become themselves reputed masters of church painting, they taught their skills to their apprentices, thereby contributing to a still wider diffusion of that iconographic model, and contributed to the adoption, by Romanian artists, of modern methods of plastic expressivity.
