Summary/Abstract: Personal names witness the culture and they represent an unmistakable reflection of the time and space in which they exist, change or disappear from use. They function as labels (both socially and linguistically) and such labels help the individual to identify himself in relation to other individuals. The system of personal names is flexible and it changes dynamically in time or in different social and historical circumstances. A good example of such flexibility of change in a particular period of time is clearly recorded on the corpus of personal names in the city of Split during the Italian occupation in 1942. The observed repertoire of personal names from that period, in addition to a noticeable impact of the local tradition in giving personal names and the tradition of sacred cults and the inheritance of personal names, shows a strong influence of the political ideology as almost all personal names were adapted to the Italian language. For this reason, the main goal of this paper is to examine, through a synchronous cross-section (socio-onomastic and chrono-onomastic), the motivation for (re)naming the personal names of Split in the period of specific social and historical circumstances in 1942.
