Summary/Abstract: The approaches to the study of discourse markers in English-speaking linguistic traditions are described in this paper. A review of current research directions and terminology, definition and classification issues within different approaches to discourse markers are presented. Questions and issues related to discourse marker definitions given by several authors who established a theoretical framework for studying discourse markers have been analysed.
