Summary/Abstract: In this paper the authors explore the characteristics and behaviour of male characters in Wilde's drama The Importance of Being Ernest which imply their homosexuality. In contrast, female characters in the play are presented as asexual and androgynous persons that assume the role of pater familias. Having tackled the topic of homosexuality and morality, Oscar Wilde endeavoured in changing social attitudes and beliefs, thus paving the way to the ideas of sexual revolution of 20th century.
