Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the valency of verbs governing the complement of manner in Bosnian and Slovene. The multilevel valency analysis has shown that all the analyzed verbs contain the manner (characteristics) participant in their semantic valency, while its complement realizations vary. The (functional) adverbial of manner is the obligatory realization of the manner (characteristic) visible only in some cases (cf. Bosnian verbs držati se ‘to be in a particular condition’ or tretirati ‘to treat’; Slovene verbs imeti se ‘to have a good (bad, etc.) time’ or obravnavati ‘to treat’), in others it represents only one of the possible complement realizations, competing with different adjective or noun complements (cf. Bosnian osjećati se strancem ‘to feel like a stranger’ with a noun complement in instrumental case or Slovene izpasti sproščen ‘to turn out relaxed’ with an adjective complement in nominative case). In addition, the analysis has revealed a different behaviour of such verbs with regard to the number and type of participants and complements; from a contrastive point of view, on the other hand, it can be said that the analyzed Bosnian and Slovene verbs exhibit relatively comparable valency properties.
