Summary/Abstract: The paper investigates the relationship between contractualism and freedom, in the Sexual Contract, Carole Pateman’s famous book. Conceiving contractualism, generally, as one of the most important theoretical sources for the individual freedom, we present and interpret the arguments of Carole Pateman for the „masculine” nature of the social contract. Then, we identify the consequences that this nature of the social contract holds in what concerns the status of women within society. With this approach the analysis highlights that the „origin” of freedom and its substance are generated by the individual freedoms guaranteed politically by the state (society or commonwealth) appear as a consequence of the contract of origin among the individuals and the state.
