Summary/Abstract: The present article examines two compositions from the decoration of the Bachkovo ossuary: the vision of prophet Ezekiel in the field of dry bones in the crypt and the Theophanic vision in the narthex of the church. Both compositions are rarely presented in Byzantine art. The vision of prophet Ezekiel in the field of dry bones does not follow an established iconographic model. Up until that moment in time, this scene has been mostly used with different purposes. The Bachkovo fresco depicts an adaptation of the scene to a cemeterial monument context in which the theme of death and resurrection of the dead plays a prominent role. To interpret the theophanic view of the upper floor, the article presents an identification of the figures as the prophet Ezekiel and the prophet Isaiah, respectively. This scene in Bachkovo demonstrates the perception of an early iconographic model and the stage of its migration to a different visual context and preferences.
