Summary/Abstract: The present study deals with official and unofficial diplomatic relations between the Holy See and the United States of America in the period from the 19th century to the end of the World War I when it simultaneously observes the Catholic Church and its influence on the American society. The conflict of the World War I represents a fundamental milestone that 94 Marek Šmíd a Aleš Černý made the new superpower a confident guarantor of the world order which clashed in its peace plans with the ideas of world order from the perspective of the Holy See. This conflict of thought was also influenced by two differently arranged personalities, Pope Benedict XV and President Thomas Woodrow Wilson, who sought to end the conflict and assert their influence in the world.
