Summary/Abstract: Socio-economic development is a complex process that must be considered multidimensionally. However, the indicators estimated by the UN are global in nature and are not sensitive enough for regional comparisons. The purpose of this study is to construct measures of socioeconomic development for African countries, to validate their applicability, and to examine their sensitivity to changes in weights that describe the impact of selected aspects of social and economic development. Taxonomic distances and variables describing 8 different categories of quality of life and level of development were used. Countries were grouped into homogeneous classes. The applicability of the proposed approach was confirmed by comparing it with other measures constructed for Africa.
