Summary/Abstract: A number of international and European documents made recommendations to nurses and midwives for evidence-based practice. In response to European requirements for the delivery of quality healthcare, it is necessary to develop the research activity of nurses and midwives. The aim of the article is to make a comprehensive comparative analysis of the development of research activities of nurses and midwives in our country for the period 2000 - 2020 compared to international development and to outline the innovations in trends and prospects for this activity. Material and methods: In the period from May 2020 to November 2021 a comprehensive medical and social survey was conducted using sociological and statistical methods. Results and discussion: The analysis of publicly available information on the research activities of nurses and midwives in Bulgaria shows a shift in scientific interest from areas related to training to study the role and place of nurses and midwives in providing quality health care and disease prevention. There is a shortage of research competencies among nurses and midwives, with practitioners and teachers assessing their training mainly as insufficient or missing. The Delphi study identified the necessary activities in the development of research in health care in our country. Conclusion: Quality health care is scientifically based and evidence-based, which is ensured by conducting research in health care.
