Rediscovering a Heritage – Restoration of a Funerary Sphinx from the Old Collection of the National Museum of Unification Alba Iulia

Summary/Abstract: The National Museum of Unification presents a rich heritage when it comes to its cultural assets in general and particularly rich in terms of cultural assets of lapidary support. Ever since the first months of 2022, my attention has been drawn by a series of lithic pieces from the complex heritage of the collection mentioned above, this time pieces with anthropomorphic representations. A number of these entered the stone restoration laboratory for a laborious technical process of conservation and restoration. Even if each piece is distinct, in the pages of this study I will try to discuss the main stages of restoration, focusing on a particular case study, that of the 15 sphinxes of particular importance in the lapidary of the museum of Alba Iulia. The present study aims to present the stages of restoration of the cultural asset of lithic support.
