Summary/Abstract: The author demonstrates how the expertly argued plans and the attitudes of the top ranks of the Czechoslovak Armed Forces, which were deeply rooted in the idea of Czechoslovak statehood, clashed with the dynamic of international and Czechoslovak internal events in 1938, and were recast under their weight. In 1938 the Army command was preparing for war with Germany. It was worried that the Wehrmacht might take Czechoslovakia by surprise and might thus prevent a mobilization of Czechoslovak troops, which would make long-term defence inconceivable. Consequently, the General Staff twice proposed extraordinary military measures in the first half of 1938 (in connection with the Anschlufi in March and reports about irregular movements by the Wehrmacht in May).
