Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the subject of professional preferences as an important factor determining the choice of further education by eighth grade students. The topic seems to be topical and important in the face of the changing needs of the economy and the requirements of the labor market. The theoretical and empirical nature of the article is an example of synergy between the selected theories of professional development and the practice of choosing the direction of education by young people who graduate from primary school. The concept of the article assumes an introduction to the subject, a short analysis of selected theories of professional development, a presentation of own research and conclusions. The subject of the research procedure are occupational preferences diagnosed in a group of 100 eighth grade students and their professional choices. The intention of the authors is to show the role of professional preferences and their relationship with the choice of the path of vocational education. The presented research is part of a wider research project in the field of career counseling.
