Summary/Abstract: The article presents the limitations of the prevalent concept regarding the marriage market in reference to the approach of the economist Gary Becker. It indicates that the currently dominant, neoclassical-rationalist approach has significant shortcomings which allow the development of market definition. Assumptions about the inextricable relationship between the market and capitalism, the “naturalness” of the market and rationality in decision-making by individuals are analyzed from a historical, performative and structural perspective. Traditional market analysis is applied to the marriage market, showing new research directions for social researchers. This article also presents a modified approach to the marriage market, utilizing the theories of Fernand Braudel, Michel Callon, and Pierre Bourdieu.
