Summary/Abstract: The land reform in Bulgaria during the second half of the 1940s is examined in depth in the article. All the questions of greater importance connected with the reform are considered: the preparation of the bill and ills discussion at ths National Assembly, the views on the reform of the individual political parties and formations, of the different organizations and economic leaders, the course of the changes in land ownership and the granting of land to tens of thousands of poor peasants and to various state and co-operative farms and institutes in 1946–1948, the peculiarities of the reform in Dobroudja and other regions of the country, the results of the implementation of the Labour Land Ownership Act, etc. It is pointed out that 135,000 peasant families were given about 1,310,000 decares of land and the state farms received 775,000 decares (by the end of 1948). As a result of the reform the private sector in Bulgarian farming expanded by 654,000 decares at the expense of the land owned by the state and the municipalities and by different public holdings. The reform did not alter the basic characteristics of agriculture nor did it: bring about major social and economic consequences.
