Summary/Abstract: The article follows up Bulgaria’s economic relations with tl1e United States from the end of World War II to the sharp restriction of economic ties in 1949 and the breaking off of diplomatic relations between the two countries at the beginning of 1950. The process of resuming and developing trade in the postwar years, the particular features of commercial links and the priority of compensation deals in foreign trade, as well as the strong impact of the political and economic conditions on Bulgarian-American economic relations are elucidated. Considerable space is devoted to the, role of the Bulgarian Political Representation in Washington and to the preparations for and realization of the big “Colman” compensation deal. Other aspects of bilateral economic relations are also examined: Bulgaria’s debts under the 1947 Peace Treaty and the prewar state loans, settlement of the questions connected with the nationalization of the American enterprises in Bulgaria and of the Bulgarian assets in the USA.
