Summary/Abstract: One of the most significant authors of the twentieth century, his work being critically positioned between modern and postmodern literature, John Fowles is well-known for his irresistible settings, mysterious plots and characters so vivid and lifelike that it seems almost impossible for the reader not to identify with at least one of them. Also known as an opponent of conservative thinking, Fowles vividly depicted his love stories, bringing us closer to the real human passions and often selfish actions. He was interested in modern psychology, particularly Jung’s archetypes, which is visible in The Magus through Nicholas Urfe’s relationships with Lily and Alison. This paper has dealt with the motif of love in this novel, at the same time touching upon the subjects such as malefemale relationships and the role of free woman in society. We have raised the question whether an authentic woman, with all her flaws and true desires, can be loved and accepted for who she is, or simply rejected as immoral and disgraceful. Although in the end it is not clear whether the protagonist chose his true other half, it is safe to admit that he at least succeeded in bringing himself one step closer to authenticity. Having this in mind, could we consider Lily the anima in this case, or does this role really belong to Alison? This paper has, hopefully, clarified the question of what we call true love and provided a better understanding of the main character who is still on his way of fully accepting himself and reaching authenticity
