Summary/Abstract: The historians of the First Crusade had a relatively good knowledge of the geographic names of the Balkans. Along with the geographic nomenclature – Moesia, Thrace, Macedonia. Dacia and Illyria – they freely used also the new regional names – Bulgaria and Sclavonia. In their notion the toponym Bulgaria incorporated the larger part of the land of the First Bulgarian Kingdom which was included in the confines of the Byzantine Empire after the final occupation of Bulgaria by Byzantium in 1018.
